IDEA is The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. This is the Federal Law that regulates Special Education Services. It is important for parents and educators to be familiar with this law, as it is occasionally updated (as it was in 2004) to make sure that Special Education students receive a Free and Appropriate Public Education (FAPE). The 2004 revisions to IDEA put more power in the hands of the parents of Special Education students. An especially important breakthrough was the addition of Response To Intervention to the evaluation process. RTI assures that their child will receive interventions and ongoing assessment before they are evaluated for Special Education. Learn more about IDEA at this link: http://idea.ed.gov/
The State of Arizona makes a great deal of information available to parents through the Parent Information Network.
